What is Morning Sickness and How Do I Cope, Anyway?

So you’re vomiting. Feeling nauseous. Looking down the toilet again it is pretty ironic that you’ve been waiting and planning this for some time now, and now instead of enjoying what many claim to be a wondrous experience, you’re in the bathroom trying hard to ignore that rolling feeling in the pit of your stomach along with all the other feelings that accompany it.

This is morning sickness believe it or not. Welcome to your pregnancy, expectant mommy.

For many pregnant women — about three quarters of them — this condition lasts only for the first trimester (Only? I can hear you moan now! That’s long enough isn’t it?)

The nausea begins around your sixth week of pregnancy, but here again it depends on the woman’s individual conditions. For some pregnant women, the nausea sets in as early as the fourth week. (Great news !)

Your nausea may start out mild, only to get more severe in the following four weeks or so. Thankfully, about half of the women who do experience it feel complete relief about 14 weeks into their pregnancy (Yes, there is light at the end of the tunnel.)

So what causes this, anyway? Well it may surprise you to know that…..

Obviously, the direct cause of morning sickness is pregnancy! Oh, you were looking for something more specific?

The bad news of this condition is that there isn’t actually a known cause. Really – even though thousands of women suffer from it right now, we just don’t know why it happens. And this doesn’t help you right now though does it?

Why me? That’s a question doctors frequently hear . . . as well as husbands and moms and . . . well, you get the idea.

Are there certain conditions that seem to be more conducive to morning sickness than others are? There really do seem to be a few at least that “triggers” morning sickness off, just like with any other health issue.

Some researchers think that there may be a genetic component, as some studies have shown women who suffer often had mothers and sisters who suffer from this as well. Not conclusive but an indicator to look out for.

As you continue with your pregnancy, you’re going to discover more than you probably ever thought you needed to know about your morning sickness.
